Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. Refrigerants are liquids stored in your air conditioner’s coils that cool and dehumidify indoor air. Without refrigerants, air conditioning would not be possible. Over the years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 because of its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now compatible with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and is free of chlorine, which means it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel great about using this refrigerant in South Beloit and Belvidere because it’ll help make your system work efficiently, reliably and quietly, and offer the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should look into upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately phased out. The old refrigerant will become hard to find in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Fleming Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. work with R-410A, so you can be sure we have an AC or heat pump more suited to your needs. You should also avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
