Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter comes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, the majority of them can be tracked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system may suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system could be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises at the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies could notice more symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
