How Do UVC Air Purifiers Work?

You probably know that the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV) causes painful sunburn. But did you know that a different type of ultraviolet light can be useful for keeping your residence’s air clean?

The sun emits two types of dangerous UV rays, UVA and UVB. These harmful rays can lead to sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and other signs of premature aging.

There’s another type of UV light, known as UVC. While full exposure to this ultraviolet light is harmful for your skin or eyes, it can safely be used to clean air, water and various surfaces.

Fleming Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. uses this light in several of our products to improve air filtration in South Beloit and Belvidere homes.

How Ultraviolet Light is Used

This distinct wavelength is classified as “germicidal” since it wipes out the DNA of bacteria and viruses. When pathogens pass through this light, they eventually die because they can’t multiply.

This makes UVC light a mighty replacement to chemical disinfection. Germicidal light is employed in lots of disinfection procedures, like medical laboratories and hospitals. It’s also applied to purify drinking water and other liquids produced in food processing.

It’s becoming a popular choice to freshen air in homes in South Beloit and Belvidere. That’s since it can also wipe out typical indoor contaminants such as mold, mildew and bacteria. This is an additional advantage for family members who suffer from seasonal allergies or asthma.

Having Germicidal UV Light in Your House

We install a germicidal UV light inside your HVAC system’s ductwork. Because the light is put inside the ductwork, it makes it compatible with many heating and cooling systems. This also keeps its rays securely housed while giving great disinfection for your residence’s air.

Dirty air is cleaned in a two-step process, first moving through your air filter and then the UV light in advance of moving throughout your home. Even when your heat or air conditioning isn’t working, these lights still operate to keep your air, ductwork and home comfort equipment clean.

This whole-house solution is better than a portable air purifier, which is restricted to cleaning the air in a single room. Portable air purifiers also can’t clean your ductwork or the innerworkings of your HVAC system. A clean HVAC system is often a more efficient one that may even run for a longer life span. And, some portable air purifiers have a bad reputation for creating ozone.

When considering buying a germicidal lamp for your house, it’s critical to get one that doesn’t make ozone. While ozone is great at getting rid of odors and chemicals, it can also irritate your lungs and create other respiratory troubles.
